Topic in Short:
The Berlin wall was a barrier that divided Berlin for around 30 years and to this day, it remains one of the most powerful and iconic symbols of the Cold War.
Constructed by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), on 13 August 1961, the official purpose of this Berlin Wall was to keep the West German people from entering East Germany, but it primarily served the objective of stopping the mass exodus of people from East Germany to West Germany.
In the West Germany, people referred to the border as the “death strip” because around 200 people were killed while trying to flee to East.
After a series of political events which occurred in 1989, the gates in the border were later opened in November 1989 by the East German officials. The demolition of wall, which was concluded on October 1990, was one of the most important historical events in the 20th century. The fall of the Wall marked the first critical step towards German reunification, which occurred on 3rd October 1990 with the dissolution of East Germany and the official reunification of the German state along the West German government.
